Vinyl and Aluminum Fence Installation in Kitchener

Vinyl and aluminum cost more up front than wood and then ask nothing of you afterwards. Whether that trade is worth it depends mostly on how long you are staying.

These are the two low-maintenance options, and they do quite different jobs. Vinyl is a privacy fence: solid panels, usually white or a neutral, that replace what a board fence does. Aluminum is ornamental: you see through it, it defines a boundary without closing it in, and it is a very common choice around pools and front gardens where the point is enclosure rather than screening.

Vinyl

Good vinyl does not rot, does not need staining, and does not go grey. It is more expensive than a treated board fence up front and it is close to zero effort afterwards, so it tends to make sense for people staying put. Two things are worth knowing. First, quality varies a great deal and thin panels get brittle in the cold, which matters here — a panel that goes brittle can crack when a snowblower throws ice at it or a branch comes down. Second, vinyl is rigid: it does not rake to follow a slope the way chain link does, so on uneven ground it steps, and that stepping has to be designed rather than discovered.

Aluminum

Ornamental aluminum is powder-coated, usually black, and it does not rust the way wrought iron does. It is a strong option for a pool enclosure: it meets the height requirement comfortably, it is hard to climb if the picket spacing is right, and it does not block the view of the pool from the house, which is a safety argument as much as an aesthetic one. Unlike vinyl it can be racked to follow a grade, so it handles a sloped yard well. It will not give you privacy — that is not what it is for.

Posts are still posts

The material above ground changes; the ground does not. Vinyl and aluminum posts still have to be set below frost depth in Kitchener clay, and a no-maintenance fence that heaves is no better than a wooden one that heaves — arguably worse, because a vinyl panel that has been forced out of square does not quietly go back. The saving is on the painting, not on the foundation.

Which to pick

If you want privacy and never want to stain anything: vinyl. If you want an open boundary, a pool enclosure, or a front garden fence that does not block the house: aluminum. If you are moving in a few years, or the run is long, a well-built treated wood fence is usually still the better value and we will say so.

Frequently asked questions

Does vinyl fence crack in Ontario winters?

Cheap vinyl can, particularly when it is hit while cold. Better grades are formulated for it and hold up fine. This is one of the places where paying for the material grade genuinely matters rather than being an upsell.

Can aluminum fence be used as a pool enclosure in Kitchener?

Commonly, yes — it meets the 1.52 m minimum easily and is difficult to climb with correct picket spacing, and it still needs the City's enclosure permit and inspection like any other enclosure. The gate hardware is specified to the by-law.

Is vinyl cheaper than cedar?

Usually somewhere between treated spruce and cedar on material, with similar installation cost. Over fifteen years, once you count staining a wood fence every few years, the gap narrows considerably.
