Fence Costs in Kitchener (2026)

Planning ranges for fencing in Kitchener in 2026, and a plain account of why two quotes for the same length of fence can differ by thousands.

Fence quotes vary more than almost any other trade for what looks like identical work, and it is rarely the material. Two 100-foot board fences can differ by thousands because one is on open flat ground reachable by machine and the other is on clay, behind a house, through a 36-inch gate, around three mature trees, with an old fence to remove first. The length is the least interesting number on the page.

What moves the price, in rough order

  • Access. Whether a machine can reach the line. A backyard reachable only on foot means every post hole is hand-dug or done with a portable auger and every bag of concrete is carried. This is routinely the single biggest difference between two quotes.
  • What is in the ground. Clay, rock, tree roots, buried construction debris, an old concrete footing, a filled cistern. Kitchener's older lots hide all of these.
  • Removal and disposal of the old fence. Taking out old posts set in concrete is real work, and the concrete has to go somewhere.
  • Grade. A sloped or uneven line means stepping or racking, more posts, and more layout time.
  • Gates. A gate costs several times what the equivalent length of fence costs. A wide double gate for machine access costs more again, because the posts and hardware have to carry it.
  • Material. Treated spruce, cedar, chain link, vinyl and aluminum sit at different points, but material is usually a smaller share of a residential fence quote than people expect.

How the quote should be presented

A fence quote worth accepting says the post depth, the post spacing, the number of rails, the material grade, whether the old fence removal and disposal is included, and what happens if the ground turns out to be different from what was visible. A per-foot number with none of that behind it is not comparable to anything, and comparing two of them tells you nothing except which contractor was more optimistic about what is under the grass.

Pool enclosures

A pool enclosure is priced differently from a garden fence because the requirements are different: the 1.52 metre minimum height measured from outside, gate hardware to the by-law, no climbable gaps, and the City's enclosure permit and inspection in the schedule. Often much of the enclosure already exists in the form of the house, garage and an existing fence, and the actual work is smaller than a full perimeter — which is why it is worth having someone look before assuming a number.

Where the money is best spent

On the posts. In this region, in this soil, the post is the fence. Spending up on board grade while economising on post depth and spacing is the reverse of what lasts, and it is the most common way a fence that looked like good value turns into a repair quote in five years.

Frequently asked questions

What does a 6-foot board privacy fence cost in Kitchener?

As a planning range, a straightforward treated board fence on accessible ground with no removal is commonly quoted in the low tens of dollars per linear foot installed, with cedar meaningfully higher. Restricted access, old fence removal, clay or roots can move that substantially. The only number that means anything is one written after someone has walked your line.

Is chain link cheaper than wood?

Per foot, generally yes, particularly on longer runs, and it needs nothing doing to it afterwards. Black vinyl-coated costs more than galvanized. Where wood wins is privacy, which chain link does not provide at any price.

Why is the gate such a big part of the quote?

Because a gate is a moving structure carrying its own weight on two hinges. It needs heavier posts, bracing and hardware, and it is the part of any fence most likely to be a problem later if it is underbuilt. A wide gate for a trailer or a mower costs more again.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. The site visit and the written quote are free. What we will not do is give a number over the phone for a fence nobody has looked at, because on Kitchener lots the ground is most of the story and a phone number is a guess that one of us ends up paying for.

Is it cheaper in the winter?

Sometimes, and it is genuinely worth asking about. Frozen ground makes digging harder and there are days it cannot be done at all, but the schedule is quieter and booking then rather than in May can work in your favour. Pool enclosures are the exception, since those are usually tied to a summer deadline.

Can I supply my own material?

It can be done, though it tends to save less than people expect once the material list has been corrected, and it complicates who is responsible if something fails. If you want to go that route, say so at the quote stage rather than after.
